Afghanistan was the participating country of this year’s Asia cup cricket tournament which was scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan based on the turn, and due to relationship between India and Pakistan, The PCB Pakistan cricket board offered to swap the hosting venue with Sri Lanka the country which also been successful of controlling the Covid 19 pandemic.
The sub continent cricket followers were hopeful after the Sri Lankan cricket board accepted the offer but the Board of control for cricket in India president Saurav Ganugly said that tournament will be canceled for the year 2020 due to logistics and prevention reasons of health of the players. Along with restrictions based on individual country’s pandemic situation and travel, guidelines are the other reasons the Asia cup had to be canceled for this year
Apart from Indian Pakistan Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the other two sides were Afghanistan and one Asian qualifier team total 6 teams were the part of the tournament
The 2021 tournament will be played in Sri Lanka and 2022 to be played in Pakistan
The previous edition of the tournament was hosted by India at the UAE and India was the winner.
The historic Asia cup was first played in 1984 at UAE to encourage Asia cricket and its earlier stage it was dominated by India and Pakistan the two test cricket playing nations and Sri Lanka. Later Bangladesh and now Afghanistan are two new teams as both of the teams are playing good professional cricket and producing young talent. Which made Asia cup more fascinating to watch between all Asian team which produces high quality professional cricket on ground.
SLC the Sri Lankan Cricket Board was keen to organize the tournament but high level of Medical arrangements and prevention measures were required to host such high level tournament along with broadcast arrangements although had it went ahead the tournament was to be played in the locked ground with no spectators and new rules where players could have been reserved to replace any player of gets unwell. But Sri Lanka couldn’t confirm its home series with India for the bilingual tournament and hosting such large scale tournament was under doubts which later proven right.
However, Sri Lanka did get the Nod of ACC to be the hosting venue for Asia cup to be played in june 2021 which would end the 10 years long wait for the country as Sri Lanka last hosted the Asia cup in the year 2010
